RELEASE: New TV Ad Singles Out State Senate for Blocking Fair Elections and Urges Governor Cuomo to “Hold the Line” Against Them
Washington, DC—Public Campaign Action Fund released the second TV ad today in its $1 million media campaign to support an overhaul of New York’s broken campaign finance laws. Using the restoration of the State Capitol building in Albany as the backdrop, the ad blames the State Senate for not moving ahead and encourages Governor Andrew Cuomo, a backer of reform, to not give in to opponents.
The ad, “Capitol,” is available online at http://youtu.be/XQ6whi0Yug0.
“Senate Republicans must decide whether they’re on the side of their special interest donors or on the side of everyday people who want to trust that their government works for them,” said David Donnelly, executive director of Public Campaign Action Fund and member of the Fair Elections for New York campaign. “The time for action is now. New Yorkers have waited too long for this reform. The Governor’s proposed it in his budget and the Assembly passed it in theirs. The Governor must not yield to the Senate obstructionists.”
The ad, which begins airing today in five media markets around the state, features photos of the restoration of the state capitol, as a narrator says, “For years, our State Capitol was damaged. But under Governor Cuomo, it was finally cleaned up. He said the restoration was a symbol of his efforts to restore confidence in government. Now we need to clean up the damage from something else: the unfair influence of big money in our elections.”
It ends, “But the Senate is blocking the Governor’s Fair Elections Proposal. He must hold the line against them. Let’s pass the Fair Elections Proposal for all state races. The time has come for more than just symbols.”
Fair Elections is a comprehensive package of reforms that includes matching small donations with public funds for candidates for all state offices, similar to a popular program in New York City.
The first ad in the series launched two weeks ago and can be seen here: http://youtu.be/2-OHp-fE70I.
In addition to the TV ad, thousands of households in Sens. Jack Martins and Mark Grisanti’s districts have started to receive mailers highlighting their opposition to reform and favors for campaign donors. They are available here and here.
